Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford is one of the most famous and influential undergraduate degrees in the world. Created in the 1920s as an alternative to Classics, PPE has produced more world leaders, prime ministers, and influential thinkers than arguably any other degree programme. The course combines three intellectually demanding disciplines, taught through Oxford's tutorial system.
In the first year, students study all three subjects. From the second year, they can either continue with all three or drop one to focus on two. This flexibility allows students to follow their intellectual interests while maintaining the distinctive breadth that PPE is known for.
Section 01
Typical offer: AAA at A-Level. No specific subjects are required, though Mathematics, History, English, and Economics are common choices. IB: 39 points with 6,6,6 at Higher Level. Around 2,140 students apply for 279 places (roughly 8:1).
Section 02
Apply via UCAS by 15 October 2025. Check the current admissions test requirements on the Oxford PPE page — the TSA has been replaced. Interviews run in December, typically 2 interviews covering different aspects of the three subjects. You may be asked philosophical questions, political reasoning problems, or economic scenarios.
Section 03
PPE interviews are discussion-based. You might be asked to argue both sides of a political question, reason through an ethical dilemma, or interpret economic data. Interviewers reward clear logical thinking, willingness to question your own assumptions, and intellectual flexibility. You do not need to know political theory or philosophy — they are testing how you reason, not what you already know.

Holistic assessment combining admissions test, interview performance, predicted grades, and personal statement. PPE attracts many strong applicants, so interview performance is particularly important in differentiating candidates.
Section 05
Show genuine intellectual curiosity across the PPE disciplines. Discuss a specific philosophical argument, political question, or economic concept that genuinely interests you and what questions it raised. Demonstrate that you can think analytically across different domains. Do not list extracurriculars or volunteer work.

PPE PS例文 →Section 06
Year 1 (Prelims): Core papers in all three subjects — introduction to philosophy, political theory, and economics (micro and macro). Years 2-3 (Finals): Choose to continue all three or drop one. Options include political philosophy, international relations, economic theory, public economics, philosophy of mind, and more.
Section 07
Talking Politics — excellent for understanding political reasoning. Philosophy Bites — short, sharp philosophical discussions accessible to beginners.
Justice by Michael Sandel — an engaging introduction to political philosophy through real-world dilemmas.
Section 08
PPE application numbers vary by college. Some receive significantly more applications. Research college-level data. Balliol is historically associated with PPE but many colleges have strong PPE tutors. Open application works well for PPE.
Section 09
PPE graduates enter politics and government, civil service, consulting, journalism and media, finance, law, NGOs, and academia. The breadth of the degree and the Oxford brand open doors across virtually every sector.
Section 10
Oxford accepts IB, AP, and European qualifications for PPE. IELTS 7.5 overall with 7.0 per component (higher than standard due to the essay-intensive nature). Chinese applicants typically need A-Levels or IB.
