ESAT 2026: What's Changed and How to Prepare

SamuelSamuel·

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is now a critical component of applications to science and engineering courses at both Oxford and Cambridge, as well as Imperial College London. For 2026, the test is managed by UAT-UK and delivered by Pearson VUE.

What the ESAT Tests

The ESAT consists of a compulsory Mathematics module plus two additional modules chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics 2, depending on your course. Each module is 40 minutes long, and the total test duration is 2 hours.

Unlike A-Level exams, the ESAT is designed to test your ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar problems rather than to recall specific content. The questions are multiple-choice, but they require genuine mathematical reasoning and scientific understanding.

Preparation Strategy

Start by ensuring your content knowledge is solid across all relevant modules. The ESAT draws on A-Level content but asks you to use it in unexpected ways. Gaps in foundational knowledge will be exposed by the test format.

Next, work through all available past papers under timed conditions. Pay attention to the questions you get wrong and understand why — is it a content gap, a time management issue, or a problem-solving technique you have not developed?

The most effective preparation combines content review, timed practice, and deliberate work on problem-solving strategies. Many students find that working with a specialist tutor for even a few sessions can help them identify and address specific weaknesses.

Common Pitfalls

The most common mistake is spending too long on individual questions. The time pressure is real, and you need to develop the ability to recognise when a question is taking too long and move on. You can always return to it if time allows.

Another frequent issue is not reading questions carefully enough. Many ESAT questions have subtle distinctions in their wording that change the answer significantly. Slow down on the reading, speed up on the calculation.

Our Approach

At Oxbridge Mentors, our ESAT tutors have scored in the top percentiles on the test and understand its structure deeply. We focus on building the problem-solving instincts that the test rewards, rather than simply drilling past papers.
