Oxford Modern Languages and Linguistics | 面接（Interview）とは

Oxbridge面接とは何ですか？

Oxford・Cambridgeの面接は、暗記した知識を確認するためではなく、「どのように考えるか」を評価するためのものです。 学科の専門教員が1対1（または少人数）で、見慣れない問題を出したり、議論を深めたりします。 合否において非常に重要な位置を占めています。

面接の一般的な流れ

  • ▸通常2〜3回の面接（各20〜30分）が行われます
  • ▸学科の教授または講師が面接官を務めます
  • ▸Personal Statementの内容について質問されることが多いです
  • ▸見慣れない問題を渡されて、声に出しながら考えることが求められます
  • ▸近年はオンライン（Zoom等）面接も増えており、日本から参加できる場合があります

foundational reading and language curiosity

  • Choose two or three works, films, poems, or cultural topics linked to your chosen language and write notes on specific moments rather than summaries.
  • Start a notebook of translation puzzles, idioms, grammar contrasts, and examples of language change or variation.
  • Work through introductory linguistics resources such as Oxford's recommended supercurricular materials or first-year preliminary reading.
  • Practise explaining why Modern Languages and Linguistics is the right joint course rather than Modern Languages alone.

8-12 weeks

close reading and data analysis

  • Do weekly close readings of short poems, prose extracts, or film scenes, focusing on title, form, imagery, and ambiguity.
  • Practise linguistic data puzzles by writing observations before conclusions.
  • Compare two translation choices for the same phrase or passage and explain the trade-off.
  • Discuss one personal-statement work aloud with a teacher, friend, or mentor using exact evidence from the text.

4-6 weeks

  • Record yourself solving an unseen language-pattern task and listen for whether your reasoning is clear.
  • Run short mock discussions on 'What is language?', translation, grammar accuracy, and genre difference.
  • Re-read the works and cultural topics named in your UCAS application and prepare three flexible discussion routes for each.
  • Practise responding to a challenge by saying what evidence would make you revise your view.

1-2 weeks

  • Do at least two mock interviews: one language/literature/culture focused and one linguistics/data focused.
  • Check Oxford's interview timetable and keep the possible second-college interview dates free.
  • Test Microsoft Teams, webcam, microphone, lighting, and a quiet interview space.
  • Prepare paper and pens for Tier 1 interviews and keep your personal statement and any pre-reading accessible.

  • Review your best examples rather than learning new material.
  • Sleep properly and avoid over-rehearsing scripted answers.
  • Warm up with one short language puzzle and one poem or extract.
  • Check email frequently for interview links, timetable updates, or possible additional-interview notices.
  • Remind yourself to explain uncertainty, not hide it.
